I have a question about this and all other 'open' filters.
Why won't they suck hot under-hood air into the intake rather than cooler outside air?
I know the OEM intake it right next to it, but it still seems like you'd get more hot air with something like this.
What am I missing?

Your NOT Missing anything , many of these After Market Vendor - so called Performance Items - Best Be Careful
I have seen the Lower Mounted Units ~ Trying to get that Cooler Air ~ Suck in Water ~ Then there is the Dry Vs Oil .

Really Need to be Looking at the Whole Design ( Sq. In. of Media Filtering Area ) ( Media Type ) ( Water Escape or Over Loading Drainage )

Certainly how small Micron does come into Play , You have to Draw the Line on How You will Drive and Where You take this : Drive~Line

If You doing Dusty Roads in Texas for 100 Miles a week or all Clean Pavement in GA . Any of those Exposed Units at very Least should be also Bagged ..
Any of those Lower Cool Air Scope Guys , really must Watch out for Large Ponds of Water after Storms standing along the Road Side . ( Pop Up & Pop Your Motor )

Just to Mention the Basics . . coming from Guy that Ran Huge Velocity Stack on Harley - Believe Me - I got Shut Down on Highway due to Heavy Rain - Hoping for a Bridge to Hide Under ..
Certainly Trees are Out .

I even Had Dual Velocity Stacks - Shut Me Down in Freezing 15 Degree High Wind - Snow Drifts late at Night with Wind Chill around -5 ( Sucked In Bunch of Snow - Breaking Drifts ) . .
Stranded @ 11:00 PM on Edge of Road ~ Deep into Snow Drift Bank with 8K Machine many Yrs. ago Wakes You Up in Hurry . . You Hot Motor just Ate ~ Half Snow Shovel Full of Powder . .
Your Covered in White and Only 1 Reflector ( Hoping Truck of Snow Plow isn't Coming ) Round the Bend . .
Mods can and Will Cost You more then You Think ~ in a ~ Heart Beat !

Luckily I'm able to Change Plugs in the Dark , and Pull the Recoil 55 Times to Blow the Stuff from the Motor . .

You can also buy a hydro shield paired with a heat shield to prevent water to get sucked by your intake..i dont see a problem that way..

I think most of the benefit is smoothening the airflow via a straight tube vs the bellows type stock version. I think I will get the PRL as it is reasonably priced and with published results.

I have the PRL stage one. Smooth blue tube, looks good and replacement filter in the stock box. sounds great. looks good and no issues with dealer/Honda. I agree on smoothing out the airflow. Easy to put back stock tube and filter.

Sounds really good in sport mode. Probably getting the KTuner and Borla cat back.
