I'd like to use Homelink with my garage door opener, but no longer have the remote for it. I've seen various tutorials and videos on how to link, but they all seem to assume you have the remote handy.

Is there a way to link directly to the opener? And if so, can someone walk me through it like I'm an idiot, because I feel like I've tried every combination of hitting Homelink buttons, using the "learn" button on the machine and pressing the by-the-door button, with no luck.

I’ve had zero luck. I purchased a universal remote and was able to get it to pair with my door opener, but still could not get it to teach my homelink mirror in either of my cars that have them. Definitely interested in a solution.

Isn't there a learn button on the back of the garage door opener?
HomeLink
There is, and I assume it's there for a reason. But so far, I haven't been able to unlock what to do with it. For example, if I hit the button on the opener, a light begins to flash. But if I hustle over to the car and hit the homelink button, it doesn't seem to do anything. Same with going in the other order.

Yeah so it looks like you need to get a remote that works with your opener and use the learn button to sync the two. The homelink needs to have the remote pressed beside it so it can learn the signal/code/frequency of your particular garage opener model. Doesn't look like there's a way around it.
