5mm is fine, I would tell a customer to come back and do them in the near future at that point. Depends on how you drive but you've got some life left there. 3mm and under is the "you should take care of these now" range.

Average pad life if around 40k miles. Sounds like you'll probably end up with a few more months of driving, but its hard to say.
