Steel rims? Snow tire saga?

As my signature indicates I am abruptly a member of the 2019 Accord club. I had a nice set of Michelin snows on steel rims. I don't feel the need to impress anyone in winter conditions. I think steel rims are best for pot holes. Am I wrong? Let me know.

Anyhow I have four Michelin snows, steel rims, formerly used on my 2014 Accord. I would use them in a heart beat on my new car (come winter) but Tire Rack says this is a big no-no, the 16" rims don't leave room for the brakes. Is that true? No hope? Right now I have them listed on Craig's. As a complete digression I would note the phenomenal lack of treadwear (comparatively) on the Michelin snows they still have 7/32 of tread after five seasons which beats any other snow tire I've ever had. And they're good snow tires too, of course. (They were my first unidirectionals and I got schooled by them on how to pay attention when mounting tires.)

I haven't been able to find 17" Accord STEEL RIMS anywhere. They don't have them at Tire Rack or any other place on the net I have searched. Well, Alibaba might have some, but it seems you have to order 100 at once. The 2019 and 2018 Accords are very similar and I kinda sorta think that if after market rim makers were going to put out some steel 17" rims (17x7.5 to be precise) for Accords that they would have done so already.

Bottom line guys: Am I really looking at $500 for alloy rims for some effing snow tires? That will put me at around $1200 come this fall, on top of buying the new car in May. Car insurance is really only symbolic isn't it? My payout was $12.5k I'm out $10k for the new car and now I'm looking at $1200 more to get my seasonal needs in order. I have a vision of nifty alloy rims with snow tires hitting a pot hole and going SNAP. Greg N

I ordered a set of small center caps.
Which caps did you pick up?

I found this thread for the same reason. Ours in a 2017 Accord.
Hi, I picked up these caps on Amazon "Skino 4 x 60mm Car Rims Wheel Center Hub Caps C 0" and I got these stick-on emblems for the caps "4 x 56.5mm Car Lettering BBS Wheel Center Cap Sticker Wheel Emblem Badge Logo Stickers fit Honda Accessory". I don't have them yet so still hopeful that they will fit but I'm pretty sure. They have a lot of other stuff like this.

You should probably make sure that the wheels are the right size for a 2017.

Tire rack says they will fit and it was their first pick for recommended package for my Make mode and year. If they don't fit, I will be calling them.
Edit: I didn't mention in the original post that I ended up going with the Tire Rack recommended winter package. Michelin X ice i13. They dropped me down to 16 wheels for winter. Around $890 after rebates and cash back mounted and balanced.
Cool. Sounds good. I see a lot of wheels that look just like them around here on various cars with snow tires.

updated my post from before. I got the steel wheels, but in a size for my year. I was just curious on where everyone gets their middle plastic caps. Tire Rack guy says the steel wheels wont fit caps but he was pushing on me to buy their hubcaps.

the issue with the tire rack steelies is the face of the hub center bore is flush with the face of the wheel. So caps which secure inside the wheel bore don’t fit. I did find a set of slightly raised caps which fit with clips, and they fit the tire rack wheels perfectly. Obviously the clips will interfere with the hub. The caps have enough overlap on the face of the wheel that I should be able to adhere them in place and then cut off the clips. I also grabbed a set of 19mm chromed vinyl nut covers.
Right now I’m waiting on a roll of 1/8” 3m VHB mounting tape to arrive to put them on. Also mounting my wheels took a back seat when our January temps shot up to 60+.

The caps that I bought work great on the back wheels and fit nicely inside the inner hub. They are too flat for the front wheels though and they don't come anywhere near clearing the axle nut. I haven't had a chance to look for anything different that may clear the nut.

pretty sure the ones I got will clear the axle nut. They’re about 1” deep from the surface of the wheel. Maybe a little more. I’ll confirm once I permamount the caps.

Okay. I trimmed three of the clips off of the caps, and scored both sides of the remaining ones. Cleaned both wheel/cap with alcohol, then applied 1/8” VHB tape around the cap. Installed the cap and applied pressure for a minute to ensure a bond, then broke off the remaining tabs.
Last picture is with the decorative nut covers placed on the wheel for the visual. Wheels go on this afternoon, and I’ll have other pictures.

I have the same issue as the OP, but I haven't bought the car yet.

It looks like there's clearance for a 16 inch wheel on the EX, and all the versions with 17 inch wheels have 16 inch spares. The 19 inch wheel cars all have 17 inch spares. 2018 Accord Specifications & Features I'm gonna try my 16 inch alloys before I replace the wheels.

It's too bad you can't find steel wheels. All the new cars except the most basic ones come with alloys now, so there's no more cheap takeoffs anymore. Aftermarket alloys are a PITA on Hondas because they need difference lug nuts than the standard Honda nuts.
So were you able to dry the 16-in on the on the Accord 10th generation
Is that enough clearance for the brake calipers or anything else
I was planning to replace them with the civic 6.5 x 16 rim and the relevant snow s

it depends on the model and year. The front calipers on the hybrid and sport/sport touring are larger. The ‘18 hybrid will take 16” wheels ‘19+ won’t. Not positive if there was a caliper size boost for the sport in ‘19 as well.
I've run winter tires on Accords (7th gen for 13 years, 10th gen for nine days :) ) and I have gone with alloy wheels for both. Less unsprung weight = easier stopping (and faster acceleration, not that that's a big issue in winter).

I live in Saskatchewan, which knows a thing or two about winter (I'm in a resort area this week that's had over four feet of snow in the past week; highly unusual for November for here, but it happened) and gets extremely cold temperatures during part of the winter (-35 C is not unusual, pre-wind-chill; cars don't care about wind chill). I haven't bent a wheel or had any significant damage. My '07 wheels are starting to show a little weather damage, but they're on their fourteenth winter so they don't owe me anything.

Steel wheels are certainly more affordable, and if you don't mind the look of them, go for them. But it's absolutely not necessary, if you want something that looks better and has less momentum (for easier stopping).

Where did you find the caps? And the nut covers while we're at it. I'm having issues finding caps that will clear the axle nut.

Has anyone else had luck finding caps that fit well?

since the wheels sit flush with the hubs you need to stick these on with narrow VHB tape, then cut off the tabs used to center the caps. Nut covers just pop on.
