How To Restore The HUD Compass

Losing the compass and turn-by-turn directions in the Head-Up-Display (HUD) and instrument panel is a known problem for those with the Touring trim.

One way to restore it is to simply disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 seconds. Best of all, you won't lose any of your custom settings, preferences or presets. It'll came back as normal with the compass in the HUD and Turn-By-Turn directions restored.

After you reconnect the negative cable, you may have to take a short drive so that the car can complete the re-initialization process for the ACC, VSA, RDM, CMBS, and TPMS, but that's all.

This is a temporary fix. Obviously, there's still a bug that Honda must resolve, but this seems to be the easiest/quickest way to restore the compass without going through the dreaded Factory Data Reset that wipes out all of your customization, preferences, and presets.

Restoring the HUD Compass

When I brought the Accord to the dealership, they showed me an HUD button on the steering wheel that enables making several selections for the HUD. Including restoring the HUD compass. That was much easier (and successful) than disconnecting the battery. Just sayin'.

There was previously a problem and the steering wheel button didn’t restore it. They’ve since done a few software updates to fix the issue.

In regards to the Navigation. Does anyone know how to turn off the factory turn by turn voice directions? it is very annoying when I have music playing and it turns down the music and they give directions. I can clearly see the directions on the multimedia display, but maybe cannot see the solution to my issue. I also am plagued by the corrupted system where the Navi and turn by turn directions are not showing on the HUD nor the in dash display screen. My phone has also been on the fritz and my USB-C port is no longer working-thankful I got the touring model and got the wireless charger. Because of this issue I am forced to use the factory Navi. I have gone to the sound settings and lowered the system volume all the way to 0 and now my music volume is lowered when an warming about a change in direction is coming but now it's a faint voice giving directions.

So, in conclusion how do I turn off voice turn by turn directions so not to effect my music playing on the stock navigation system?

Thank you
While she’s talking, quickly turn the volume knob all the way down. This will shut her up but also give you the option to hear her again if you’d like. You just have to time it right - adjust the volume while she’s talking. Good luck!

Recently I had this issue after getting a factory reset done at the dealership because of other issues with my Hondalink. After looking through so many forums and threads I tried one thing that FINALLY worked. I simply pushed the "HUD" button and the 'Up/Down' arrow button at the same time and after about three seconds it appeared! Hopefully this helps someone else. A quick fix that might work before getting under the hood, disassembling anything or heading to the dealership. Good luck!

I tried this and my car wont start. Not sure why. The terminal looks secure and it was very straight forward. Could the remote start have anything to do with it?

All you did was disconnect the negative cable and reconnect it and now it will not start? Are any of the other electrical components working... lights come on when you open door, dash lights up if you hit the start button, horn blows, etc., etc.? Was the car starting/working properly before you disconnected the negative cable?

That's correct. Everything was working fine until I disconnected the negative terminal. All the lights and indicators work normally when I try to start it. Just won't start. I checked fuses as well. Unable to see anything.

What year is your car, how old is the battery? Do you have a way of checking/testing the voltage on your battery? Might just be a case of the battery has died and it coincidently happened at this time, I just this past weekend had to replace my battery (it was just shy of 3.5 yrs old). Due to the pandemic I had been driving the car very little in the last 18 months which will impact the performance/life of a battery. What you are experiencing "All the lights and indicators work normally when I try to start it" is exactly what my car was doing but when I hit the start button nothing happened.

It's a 2019. Battery is less than 3 years old. It's possible. I'll have to check the battery and go from there. Maybe I try to jump start with roadside assistance.

Only other thing I can think of is the immobilizer system. When I try to start the car, the red security light flashes. I don't think it did that on a regular start. Or maybe some pairing issues with the key fob after disconnecting the battery.

If the fob is opening the door(s) I wouldn't think it was a pairing issue. But now that you mention the fob have you ever replaced the battery in it (Honda suggests replacing them every 24 months)? If I remember correctly there should have been some type of display in the dash when that battery got weak to warn you. I don't remember if my security light flashed when my battery went dead it just acted like what I've experienced with other cars when battery has died. Push the start button (or turned key in other vehicles) and everything electrical either goes off or dims out like it's trying to divert every bit of energy in battery to start the car.
Sorry to hear that your car won't start after performing the HUD restore procedure. That should not have happened. Hopefully you only disconnected the negative battery for 10 seconds and not 10 minutes.

As @Fired00d discusses, you may have a weak battery. It will not send enough power to the starter relay, and thus not start the car. All the lights and accessories will still work, but there's not enough start power. Unlike the old days, you will not hear the starter trying to turn over when the battery is weak.

One thing to try is to place the fob right next to the start button and then try starting. Also, try your second fob.

Additionally, make sure all the cables are connected to negative battery post exactly how they were originally. And ensure that the negative cable is grounded securely to the car's body.

P.S., I thought the disappearing HUD problem went away with one of the updates.

Thanks. I can hear the starter doing its thing, the car just won't start. I tried the fob right next to the start button and the second fob, but no luck.

The cables are as they were. Was very straight forward to remove and replace and I only removed it for a few seconds. I'll try jumping it to see how that goes.

System software is up to date. I've checked 3 times for updates recently.

Thanks again.
This doesn't make sense. The immobilizer theory is an interesting thought.
FWIW, I've disconnected the battery for hours without issue. There's no need to worry about 10 minutes or so. I've done that hundreds of miles from home a few times in the past (for the HUD issue as I recall) and the car started right up afterwards and driving it around a half a mile and then turning it off and on again cleared all the warnings.

I still recommend disconnecting the ground at the strut tower versus removing the battery post clamp. If that clamp isn't tight, it might cause starting issues. As a former mechanic, I've seen people who have placed the clamps on the posts snugly but have not tightened them.
Are the battery clamps tight @Gemio? You want them to be pressed down onto the battery post and then tightened with a small wrench so that the don't move with firm wiggling by hand.

I look forward to seeing what comes of this.

Finally resolved. I removed the negative cable and put it back on (3rd time) but much tighter this time. Seems it was way too sensitive and I'm not one to over tighten. Such a simple thing. What a pain.

I do believe the immobilizer that was doing its thing. I may have performed the work and tried starting the car with the hood up. Must have triggered something with my sequence.

Thanks for the help folks.

@Gemio glad you got it resolved. Funny how the simplest of things can be a PITA... like you I'm leery of overtightening stuff (have broken/busted too many screws/bolts because of it). 😩

I have tried this temporary fix and its not working. I am driving the 2021 Honda Accord, using Android. Any other suggestion before I call the dealership?
